EDUCATION: A VECTOR OF PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING
A conference organized on the occasion of the centenary of the Franco-Chinese Institute of Lyon
September 2021 marks the centenary of the founding of the Franco-Chinese Institute of Lyon. A unique institution, the result of a cooperation unheard of at the time between the two countries, it has written one of the most beautiful pages in the history of intellectual relations between France and China.
Located in the Fort Saint-Irénée in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon, between 1921 and 1946, the Institute housed 473 students, including 51 girls. Among these students, most chose medicine, biology, pharmacy, mathematics, others literature, history and law. 131 of these students obtained a doctorate, 60 the title of engineer. Many of them became, a few decades later, scientists, scholars, academics, writers, poets and artists of great national and international renown.
The centenary of the IFCL – and that of university cooperation between France and China – is an opportunity to pay tribute to the initiators and participants of this exceptional human adventure, and even more so to outline the prospects for this essential dimension of the future of our bilateral relationship.
